Georgie

Georgie Originally named "George", she began laying eggs after she lived here for 1 1/2 years. To our surprise, we came into the bird room to feed and there she sits, on her first egg. Hence, she is now Georgie.

Being one of our handicapped birds, she is a constant wonder. She is independent, fearless, active and loving. You see George was blinded (completely) due to an injury. The best we can determine is that her wings grew out, she took a flight and she crashed into a window. We didn't know this when we got her (she was our first handicapped bird), but as time went on we noticed a shiny object protruding out of her wing. A full body x-ray revealed that both her wings had been broken and the object was a 5" long steel pin. It was removed surgically and she is now pain free. Unfortunately, there was no remedy for her eyes. Her left eye was punctured, and the impact of the crash blinded the good eye as well. Sometime later her bad eye became inflamed and swollen. A vet ophthalmologist donated his skills and treated her. She had an abrasion on her cornea. We thought she would lose her eye, but the doctor was able to save it. She is a regular in our outreach program.
