The Tropics Exotic Bird Refuge
has been involved with ongoing education and Animal Assisted Therapy programs for the last 11 years. Beginning as a part time endeavor, these programs have since escalated to almost full time work, and are provided to public and private schools, church and senior citizens groups, professional organizations and individuals.
School children and adults alike learn about the work being done at the parrot refuge. In addition, they learn about specific species, their life both in the wild and in captivity and whether or not the specie is endangered. Geographical locations and the status of the rain forests and other habitats worldwide are also discussed. Students are especially encouraged to study about the parrots of the world, in hopes that some will decide on a career including rescue and rehabilitation of wild and captive birds.
Animal Assisted Therapy programs are offered to hospitals, nursing homes, and retirement centers. A select group of tame, well socialized refuge birds provide both education, entertainment, and love to sick, injured and elderly citizens in our community. The public is encouraged to hold and interact with these birds, and many do so quite willingly. These outreach programs are proclaimed as the best of their kind, anywhere! Teachers comment that their students retain almost all of the information they've received, and staff working with the sick, injured and elderly say it is the most successful pet therapy program offered to date.
